→ Readings

A reading is the most straightforward presentation of A Curriculum of Courage: Making SafeArt. During the reading, Tracy will share the history of SafeArt, as well as SafeArt’s basic principles.

Readings generally last between 60 and 75 minutes and offer a lively and performative presentation of the content of the book. Readings are interactive in nature, and engage the audience with a combination of excerpts, performance elements, and discussion. Highlighted topics will be chosen based on the particular audience, and often Tracy presents one of the exercises from the book as a way to engage with the group on a deeper level. After about 50 minutes, Tracy will open up the room to questions and discussion.

Reading fee: $250 (Please note: Tracy is willing to speak at bookstores and libraries free of charge.)

Travel and mileage will be applied as agreed upon. Copies of A Curriculum of Courage will be for sale at a discounted price.

→ Workshops

Workshops are a popular offering that have proved fruitful time and again throughout SafeArt’s history. We cater our workshops to any group interested in strengthening a community through creative expression. Workshops begin with a process of clearing daily life from one’s mind in order to explore a different way of being with one’s self and with others. Participants will then dig deeply into the workshop topic through experiential explorations such as movement, writing, and visual art.

No matter the workshop theme, we will use explorations from A Curriculum of Courage to bring the challenges at hand into focus, and to spotlight and brainstorm creative resolutions. SafeArt has delivered successful workshops to people of all ages and abilities in middle and high schools, colleges, domestic violence agencies, health centers, spaces of worship, and community centers.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Becoming Trauma-Informed
  • Trauma 101: The Neurobiology of Trauma
  • Imagination, Intention and Intuition
  • Abuse: Prevention and Intervention
  • Healing from Sexual Violation
  • Acceptance, Forgiveness and Accountability
  • The Courage to Support and Care for One’s Self
  • “The Silent No:” Confronting Rape Culture
  • Expressive Explorations of Gender and Identity Spectrums
  • How To Become Open to Otherness with Empathy
  • How to Heal A Community After a Crisis or Traumatic Event
  • How To Perform Self-Care Through Dance
  • Nutrition and Emotional Health

*Please note: Tracy is willing to offer workshops on any topic in the book; please feel free to request a specific focus that you do not see listed above. (If Tracy is unavailable, another trained SafeArt facilitator will run the workshop.)

→ Trainings

Trainings are catered to those working with groups or individuals who seek to integrate SafeArt principles into their profession or volunteer work. Trainings are open to educators, visiting artists, youth leaders, mentors, mental health practitioners, social workers, medical personnel, parents, community leaders, and any individuals who seek to engage the transformative power of the arts to prevent and heal trauma.

These trainings offer interested individuals methods to prevent and respond to the traumas of their community. Although it would be naive to suggest that all trauma can be averted, the effects of trauma may be assuaged, and these trainings focus on methods of healing through expression. Any topic listed in the Workshops offering may be used for a training. In a training, participants will be taught ways to engage future participants on the chosen topic in the future.

During trainings, all involved continually trade the practitioner hat for the participant hat, allowing everyone to experience how an exploration will feel from both sides. Discussions of how best to evaluate and process the trainings will also occur, as self-care is an important SafeArt principle and essential for anyone endeavoring to perform the important work of engaging the arts for the purposes of healing.

*Please note: Tracy is willing to offer trainings on any topic in the book; please feel free to request a specific focus that you do not see listed in the Workshop topics section.

Pricing:
Two Hour Training: $400
Half Day Training: $600
Full Day Training: $1,000

Travel and mileage will be applied as agreed upon. Copies of A Curriculum of Courage will be for sale at a discounted price.

Testimonial from a past training participant:

“Your book A Curriculum of Courage: Making SafeArt needs to be in every school across this country. We want our schools to be a safe and nurturing place, yet many arrive already traumatized by past events. As an English Language Learners Specialist I thought of many of my former students (and colleagues) who could benefit from SafeArt.”

→ Residencies

Residencies generally last three or more days in a single location such as a school, college, hospital, or community center. Residencies allow for a deeper exploration of the SafeArt model, and focus on a topic or a range of topics chosen by the host.

During the residency, participants engage in making their own greater piece of SafeArt, individually and/or collaboratively. This may take the form of a performance, or a written or visual work. As we say at SafeArt, “content rules,” by which we mean that the subject matter and process of creating a piece of SafeArt is far more important than the quality of the final product. We all enter with our beginner minds and bodies, allowing us to create and explore without judgement of ourselves or others.

Residencies in schools have been the backbone of SafeArt’s programming since its inception, and are appropriate for middle to high school audiences. We are committed to reaching participants across the socioeconomic spectrum by working in classrooms and with pre-existing groups at places of worship, correctional facilities, or rehabilitation centers.

Residencies can address any topic listed in the Workshops offering.

*Please note: Tracy is willing to offer residences on any topic in the book; please feel free to request a specific focus that you do not see listed in the Workshop topics section. (If Tracy is unavailable, another trained SafeArt facilitator will run the residency.)

Pricing:
Residences start at $2,700 (for a three-day residency).

Travel and mileage will be applied as agreed upon. Copies of A Curriculum of Courage will be for sale at a discounted price.

→ Retreats

Retreats represent the most in-depth exploration of SafeArt principles and practices, as participants will spend 3-6 days at a selected location, allowing them to dive deeply into the subject matter. Retreats have become widely popular in recent years as a way for participants to spend time away from their day-to-day routines and instead settle into a period of extended exploration and reflection.

During the retreat, participants will engage in individual and group explorations that will employ a variety of creative modalities to engage with the chosen theme. We will breathe, move, sing, draw, role-play, eat, walk, and spend time each day in solitude.

Whether participants are looking to explore new pathways of expression or to find inner serenity (or both), a retreat can offer meaningful rewards for anyone willing to be honest with themselves and engage fully in the retreat agenda.

Tracy has hosted retreats in Vermont since 2010 and is willing to hold retreats for groups in any location. Generally retreat group sizes range from 8-12, for intimacy and personal attention. With Tracy and a second SafeArt facilitator, the number could be doubled. Themes tend to be more contemplative and reflective than workshops, covering topics such as:

  • Finding and Maintaining Dynamic Balance in Your Life
  • Eating to Nourish One’s Psyche, Soma, and Soul
  • Moving Meditations and Stillness
  • Yoga for Building Post-Traumatic Strength
  • Exploring Our Embodied Energies

Retreats may occur over a weekend (Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon), or over a longer span of time (up to seven days). Please contact Tracy with your desired retreat location, theme, and group size at tpenfield@safeart.org.

Retreat costs vary widely due to location and the size of the group. We are happy to design a retreat to suit your needs.
